Independent renters insurance information — not an insurer, agent, or quote service. About this site

Our Sources

Every guide on this site is built from documents we opened and read. This page lists the policy forms we rely on, the regulator pages we draw from, and what that can and cannot tell you.

The three policy forms

  • American Strategic Insurance Corp., form ASI HOR OK 09 21. An Oklahoma renters policy form published on the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s website (oid.ok.gov).
  • Lemonade Insurance Company, form LEM 04 05 23. We read Lemonade’s published sample policies for Colorado and Illinois. They are samples for a fictional insured, so the dollar figures on their declarations pages are illustrations, not standard amounts.
  • Allstate renters policy AS373. A Texas form; the edition date is not shown (policy document).

Regulator and other pages

Consumer guides from the Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (PI-017 and PI-084), the California Department of Insurance (Form 405), the South Carolina Department of Insurance, the Texas Department of Insurance, the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner, the New York Department of Financial Services and the Illinois Department of Insurance; the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; FEMA; and, for one guide, Oregon’s statute ORS 90.222. Each guide lists the pages it uses.

What three forms can and cannot tell you

  • They are not a survey of the market. Your insurer’s form may word things differently.
  • We did not read the ISO form that many insurers build on, and we did not read endorsements, which can change a policy.
  • State law and your declarations page also matter, and neither is in the forms.

How we use them

When a guide quotes a form, we quote it exactly and say which one. A script compares each quoted passage with the text of the source document we saved. That shows the words exist in the document; it does not show that our reading of them is right, and it is not professional review. See the editorial policy and the fact-checking policy.
